A sensational day at S/Wilts CC saw Wells comfortably defeat Sunbury CC, a feat which doubtless received approval from many of our senior members, as Rob Sehmi and Alex Williams blasted a quick-fire century stand to propel the team past the 140 set after a tight and orderly performance in the field. The afternoon Final against Preston Nomads was altogether a different matter as the Sussex outfit lashed 181 in their 20 overs; the Wells reply was wrecked at 47-5 whereupon Will Stickler played the innings of his life, assisted crucially by Jorge Ehren with a welter of sixes in one over, and a legend was born. The win came with just four balls in hand, and an epic effort was crowned with the euphoria of a joyous win against all odds.
A narrative of this amazing second game follows :
The Kent T20 Champions entered upon the Area Finals where they carried the County flag in true style … They decimated Sunbury CC (and so laid a 42-y-o ghost amongst older members), and took on Sussex Champions Preston Nomads, who walloped the TW bowlers to the tune of 181-5 from their twenty overs and then took out our top order leaving us wrecked on 47-5 after 6 overs.
Nobody comes back from that, but Will Stickler was to have his great day.
Somehow the batsmen battled on, and took the score up to 127-7 with four overs to go and 55 needed. Surely it was curtains …
“Start the car”, as Bumble would say …
Jorge Ehren, usually found gracing the Third Team, promoted for this campaign, joined Stix …
Jorge banged a tall six way over cow corner, but then they settled back to singles … The nineteenth over came round, the penultimate six balls, to be bowled by oppo star Jonty Jenner, with 33 still wanted from 12 deliveries.
Jorge took another single, Will Stix a huge six, and yet another single !!! Then Jorge got a decent ball, dead straight and up on him, and he got under it and it sailed towards the midwicket fence … Two fielders tried to catch and throw back but the ball beat them all for another six … The next two balls, the last two of the over, were also fast and in the block hole, but Jorge sent them both into orbit over square, to make it three sixes in a row !!!!
Will faced the last over with seven to get, picked out the boundary line, and hammered two fours … and we had won, back from the dead … And the crowd went wild !!!!

There were three individual half-centuries scored in the IIs victory total on Saturday 6 August, the players concerned being Nathan Maskell (59), Richard Cutts (50), and Brough Cooper (75*), and this feat was last achieved in August 2013 v Dartford CC II, when Mark Alexander, William Stickler and Richard Cutts were concerned. Before then, there was a major gap, June 2006 being the occasion when this occurred, with Tim Luckhurst, Nigel Keess and Craig Denness doing the honours.
