Date TW Score Opposition Score Venue Result Team
28/05/06 175 for 9 wkts Oxted 72 all out Oxted TW ESCT XI won by 103 runs TW (ESCT) XI
Wells dodged the showers and managed to complete their ESCT Fixture at Oxted, where the home side won the toss and put Wells in to bat on a bowler-friendly track. The Oxted attack was in good form, reducing the visitors' innings at one point to 107-7, opener Will Stickler having stood firm for a doughty 26, with Brough Cooper weighing in with a vital top score of 37. Nigel Keess again provided stout resistance, and the second half of the effort featured a late but match-turning knock of 36 from young Rob Sharma, who saw to 68 runs being gathered while just two further wickets fell, blunting effectively the home bowling, and setting a respectable target of 176 for victory. The Wells bowlers, however, proved to be a class above, and immediately struck to reduce Oxted to 1-2, and, despite some middle-order resistance, carried the match by putting out the home batsmen for 72 in less than thirty overs. Oxted tumbled from 60-4 at one point to a 103-run defeat, but the wickets were shared around in a fine team effort, pick of the attack being Fred Florry (3-19) and Rob Sharma (2-12) in a splendid all-round performance, whilst Raj Sharma grabbed 2-3 to wrap up the reply in short order. Wells thus proceed to the next round of this Cup Competition.
14/05/06 176 for 5 wkts Roffey 175 for 8 wkts The Nevill TW Cup XI won by 5 wkts TW (Cockspur Cup) XI
Electing to bat, the Sussex side tucked in at the Nevill, and posted a highly competitive total at almost four per over, encountering along the way some fine bowling and fielding. Graeme Corbishley and Rob Sharma each grabbed a pair of wickets, while pick of the home attack was young Fred Florry, whose 4-24 was obtained as a spinner, a style of bowling only newly learned - his former quicks now consigned to history. The weather was overcast for much of the match, but the track played truly, and surprisingly little swing was to be noted in either innings. The reply began with the experience of Raj Sharma and young Will Stickler, who posted 67 in 17 overs, whereupon Roffey broke back with four more wickets as the score rose to 86. Not another wicket was to fall, however, as the acting Club Captain and the Club Chairman put up an unbeaten winning partnership of 90 runs. Respectively, Simon Routh and Nigel Keess ('The Colonel') played so well that the 5-per-over ask was successfully answered, The Colonel returning an accomplished not out half-century in the event, and thoughts now turn to the next round of the Cup against Horsham CC (last year's winners).
