TWCC I XI |
| MCC were entertained at The Nevill in an all-day game, played unusually in bright sunshine. The MCC innings was based upon a steady opening partnership of 179 in 32 overs, during which Sevenoaks Vine skipper John Bowden put together a vintage century (118 with 17 fours) before being first out. Ed Bruce (78) anchored the effort as the score was taken past 250, and Wells then captured three more wickets before the declaration set the home XI to make 275 for victory. The chase never really materialised, wickets falling rather too regularly, but occupation of the crease was successfully managed, and MCC's attack was eventually thwarted three wickets short of an emphatic win. Bowden added to his achievements in taking 4-34, but Nigel Keess (26*) and Theo Burley (15*) played out the final eight overs to seal the draw. |

TWCC (Cockspur Cup XI) |
| Minster not monstered ... The Cockspur Cup First-Round encounter at the Nevill proved to be anything but a formality for the home Premiership XI, and Minster from the Fourth Division emerged with great pride albeit defeated at length by 62 runs. TWCC won the toss and batted, but were unconvincing in the early stages as the visitors gave an above-par performance in the field. The attack gave their all, and Nathan Nichol (3-32) provided the upsets as Wells moved to 119-4 after 24 overs. Among his scalps were Quentin Ferreira and Dan Thirkell in consecutive deliveries. Skipper Mark Smith had anchored the innings during this period, and was undefeated on 62 at this point. Joined by Brough Cooper, however, the score steadily accelerated, as the fifth pair put together a heavyweight unbroken 179 as the overs ran out. Smith reached a faultless century in the 39th over (13 x 4, 2 x 6), but Cooper's belligerence and clever running brought him 94 runs before tiredness in the final over denied him three figures also. The final five overs produced 51 runs, and how important this final burst was to be was evidenced by the sterling response from Minster. The reply stuttered to 38-3 and the formbooks seemed untroubled before a virtuoso effort from Irshaad Mahomad stole the limelight. Having been badly missed on 56 at long-on, and going lame shortly after Nichol was dismissed at 94 in the 23rd over, Mahomad played a lone hand in defying the home attack, with everything depending upon him in the chase. He saw the total up to 227 with three overs still to be bowled, before finally succumbing to a straight one in the endeavour to maintain the 10-per-over ask. No praise could be too high for this innings, which included 16 fours and 5 sixes, while going at better than a run-per-ball throughout. The remainder was inevitably anticlimactic as Wells moved to victory, but to have attained equal status during much of the game allowed Minster to go out on a high note. |
