Sunday A XI Results 2007
Date TW Score Opposition Score Venue Result Team
26/08/07 153 for 6 wkts Cowdrey 150 for 9 wkts The Nevill TWCC won by 4 wkts TWCC Sunday A
Wells concluded their campaign in the Aero Sunday League with a narrow win against Cowdrey, ending up in second spot in the table, despite half of their matches being lost to the weather. The XI could therefore be justly proud of their efforts, which, in a more conducive climate, would surely have brought them the Championship. Cowdrey chose to bat first at The Nevill, and a lack-lustre effort in the field allowed them to post 150-9 from the 40 overs. Contributions down the list showed application yet no-one went on to play a truly 'big' innings which would have posted a more challenging target. Pick of the bowlers was Evert Bekker (3-27), ably supported by skipper Jamie Baldwin and U-15 heroes Tom Elliott and Caspian Paget. Captain Joe Southwart (35) opened the innings and top-scored, with the lower order staging a recovery from 69-5 which more than doubled the total. The reply received a shock as Thomas Probert (2-37) removed both Wells openers for ducks, but Alex Williams and Richard Cutts then played stylish attacking cricket in putting together a match-turning partnership of 99 for the third wicket. Each player slammed 10 fours before Williams departed for a pulsating 54 as the 100 was reached, whereupon Cowdrey then grabbed four further wickets to stall the chase on 139-6. Cutts had watched these events from the other end, and, also reaching a valuable half-century, steered the home innings to victory with captain Baldwin, while carrying out his bat for a crucial and decisive not-out 69.
22/07/07 263 for 4 wkts HSBC 168 for 5 wkts New Beckenham TWCC won by 95 runs TWCC Sunday A
Tunbridge Wells maintained their unbeaten run in the Aero Development League 'A' Division after a 95 run win over HSBC at New Beckenham. Wells won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting wicket, although a slow outfield made boundary scoring difficult. Jamie Baldwin and Evert Bekker opened the batting and got Wells off to a flyer, capitalising on anything loose from the bowlers. Baldwin reached his fifty in the 16th over, and Bekker soon after, as 120 was put on for the first wicket before Baldwin was dismissed for 63. Brough Cooper joined Bekker at the crease but a mix up left Cooper run out for 9, then Richard Cutts also scored 9 before chipping a catch to mid-wicket. Harry Florry put on 61 with Bekker, who reached his hundred during this partnership. A final over onslaught from Bekker took him to 144 not out, and the team total closed on 263-4 after 40 overs. In reply, Graeme Corbishley picked up an early wicket, and, although he and James Sharp bowled tightly with the new ball, the second wicket didn't come until the 23rd over when the score had moved on to 92. Freddie Florry and James Nethercott bowled good 8 over spells, both picking up a wicket, but a couple of dropped catches meant that HSBC finished 5 down for 168 after their 40 overs, Richard Golbourn being out in the last over for 90. A comfortable margin of victory thus left Tunbridge Wells at the head of the Table.
15/07/07 184 for 6 wkts 181 for 9 wkts Plaistow Lane TWCC won by 4 wkts TWCC Sunday A
Tunbridge Wells Sunday First team travelled to Bromley on Sunday in an Aero Development League match. With the last two games rained off in the competition, it was good to get out and play on a hard, bouncy wicket. Bromley won the toss and decided to bat, but opening bowlers Chris Lawrence and Evert Bekker were getting plenty of movement with the orange ball. Bekker picked up two early wickets, but it was the introduction of Mark Smith to the attack that put Tunbridge Wells on top. Smith bowed a fantastic 8-over spell, and finshed with figures of 8-4-12-3. All three of his wickets were caught by wicket-keeper Theo Burley. Tight lines from Freddie Florry put the Wells in control going into the last 10 overs, but Bromley finished well to get their score to 181-9 from their 40 overs. In reply, Wells struggled against the new-ball bowling of Ring and McNeil and were 4 down in the first 10 overs. At this point, Richard Cutts was joined by Mark Smith - with the score at 35-4 - and together they rebuilt the innings in brilliant fashion. This pair put on 90 runs before Cutts was dismissed for an elegant 40. Smith was then partnered by Jamie Baldwin and 52 were required from the last 10 overs. Smith passed his 50 and was scoring quickly as Wells got in touching distance of the target. They lost Baldwin with just 15 to win but Burley and Smith took Wells home with an over to spare, Smith finishing 81 not out. The result leaves Tunbridge Wells in an excellent position in the league, having won both the games they have played, with two being abandoned.
08/07/07 209 all out Barbarians 188 all out The Nevill TWCC won by 21 runs TWCC Sunday A
Tunbridge Wells played the Barbarians in an all-day game at the Nevill on Sunday: Always a close game, and one that has been very high-scoring in previous years. Tunbridge Wells won the toss and batted and although they lost Will Stickler early, Alex Williams and Evert Bekker moved the score along at a decent pace. This was before a terrible mix-up left both at the same end while attempting a quick single, and Bekker was run out. The middle order struggled against accurate bowling from the Barbarians, who were getting just enough movement to make batting difficult. Williams was dismissed for 31 and a further 3 wickets fell before lunch. Wells went to lthe break at 86-6, and immediately afterwards, BJ Allatt was caught at mid-off and it was left to Jamie Baldwin and Chris Lawrence to restore the innings. Although it started slowly, the partnership accelerated, and when Chris Lawrence was bowled for 30, the score had moved to 187 (with a surprise 101 added thus for the 8th wkt). With help from Chris Williams and James Nethercott, Baldwin took the score past 200 and finished on 66 not out in a sterling Captain's knock as Wells were dimissed for 209. An early tea was taken, leaving the Barbarians about 50 overs to get the runs. Lawrence and Chris Williams opened the bowling, both picking up a wicket in their opening spells. Allatt came on first change and also bowled with economy. The introduction of Evert Bekker to the attack stalled the Barbariand innings, Bekker picking up 4-44, unchanged in a 14 over spell, while Nethercott netted a fantastic caught-and-bowled at the other end which put the visitors in real trouble. The Barbarians battled back however, and needed just 40 from the last 8 overs with 2 wickets in hand, but the return of Chris Williams ended the innings on 188 as he clean bowled the numbers 10 and 11 to finish with 3-17. It was a very enjoyable day's cricket, and a close game, played in the best spirit of cricket, with any result possible until the final denouement.
06/05/07 314 for 2 wkts declared Frenford CC 113 all out The Nevill TWCC won by 201 runs TWCC Sunday A
Tunbridge Wells C.C followed on from a great day's cricket for the club on Saturday with a 201-run win against Frenford C.C on Sunday. Wells won the toss and batted at the Nevill, Alex Williams and Theo Burley opening the batting with confidence, putting away any loose balls to the boundary. They scored quickly, putting on 96 for the first wicket in just 15 overs, before a terrible mix-up left both batsmen at the same end, and Williams was run out for 42. Burley was then joined by Rob Sharma, and, with Frenford struggling in the field with the quick outfield, Wells dominated. The next wicket fell in the 39th over when 201 runs had been added for the second wicket. Sharma hit 12 fours and 2 sixes in his 111 before he was bowled. Burley finished 130 not out, with 17 boundaries. Both players hit their first hundreds for the club in a fantastic partnership. Liam Flint joined Burley for the last 8 balls of the innings and finished 6 not out as Wells totalled 314. Frenford C.C went for their shots from the start, but lost wickets at regular intervals. Chris Williams took 3 wickets in his first 3 overs with some accurate swing bowling, and finished with 3-18 off 5 overs. James Sharp also bowled well, taking 2-9 off 5 overs, and Dan Thirkell chimed in with 2-31 off 7, but 'champagne moment' Brough Cooper took his first wicket for the club as well. Will Stickler's great slip catch finished the match with Frenford scoring only 113. A great weekend for the club was completed as the Sunday XI kept up the victorious progress shown in other results.
22/04/07 215 for 7 wkts Linden Park 206 all out The Nevill TWCC won by nine runs TWCC Sunday A
T.Wells won the toss and batted, only for the Park opening bowlers to put the ball in the right areas, making scoring difficult while two wickets fell early. Theo Burley and Alex Williams then moved things along before the former was undone by John Harvey (45-3). Brough Cooper next came to the wicket to add 71 with Burley against the spinners through the middle of the innings. When Cooper was dismissed for 33 (with 5 fours and a five), Wells slipped to 128-5 with 12 overs remaining. However, Burley soon passed 50 and he and Mark Smith took the score past 170 before both fell going for big shots in the closing overs. Nick Chambers started where he had left off on the Saturday, and scored a quick 23 not out from just 12 balls, and, in partnership with Rob Sharma, TW added 36 in the last 4 overs. In reply, The Park started very quickly thanks to some big hitting by Poole and Harvey, but Sharma had both caught in his opening spell. Nonetheless, the chase had raced to 73-2 after just eight overs. A fine 8-over spell by Smith slowed the scoring, but numbers 3 and 4, Clarke and Shanly, put Park into a great position to fashion a win at 135-2 after 21 overs. Even so, the introduction of Jamie Baldwin had an immediate effect as he dismissed both established players in quick succession. The visitors soon collapsed to 152-8, with Baldwin taking 4 wickets and young Chris Williams grabbing 2. Despite some late hitting by Green, TW had regained control, and Oli Reynolds returned to take the last wicket in the final over as TW won by just 9 runs. A very closely-fought game thus started the Sunday Season in encouraging fashion.
