Cowdrey CC |
TWCC won by 23 runs |
The opening round of the KL 20-20 Cup pitched Cowdrey against Wells, and the game was played out at the Swanmead Ground, with the visitors winning the toss and batting first on a bouncy but firm track.
Alex Williams set off at pace with four fours and a six in the space of four overs, but the innings was set up by the successful Cockspur Cup pairing of Quentin Ferreira and Richard Cutts, who posted 82 for the third partnership inside nine overs. Ferreira made a swashbuckling 62 (three fours and four sixes), with Cutts hitting up 29, marked by impressive running between the wickets, and at one stage the score stood at 120-2 with six overs remaining. That the innings lost its way was due to the persistence of the Cowdrey attack, which proceeded to capture the next seven wickets whilst an under-par 44 runs were added, and thus gave their batsmen a chance of reaching 165 for victory.
The reply was led by a virtuoso knock from Jack Southwart, who slammed 59 (eight fours and one six) as the score mounted threateningly, assisted by no fewer than five dropped catches and some indifferent and costly groundwork. With six overs remaining, Cowdrey had rattled up 105-4 before Southwart was wonderfully well caught by Cutts, running round on the long-on boundary, from a potential second six. Hereafter, the visiting attack safely contained the runrate, and held back the chase enough to emerge as winners by just 23 runs as the overs ran out.
The result enabled TWCC to progress into round two of the cup competition, with an away match against Bexley to be played out by June 20. |

Upminster CC |
TWCC lost by 5 wkts |
The Quarter-Final tie at Upminster saw Wells put in to bat, and the home attack enjoyed the early exchanges as they reduced the innings to a woeful 45-5. Quentin Ferreira (53) and Richard Cutts then played extremely fine cricket in adding 79 for the sixth wicket in eighteen overs, but after the former was dismissed, the score fell to 135-7 before Cutts found another steady partner in skipper Simon Routh. These two added an unbroken 62 for the eighth partnership, which allowed Wells to post a very respectable score of 197-7 from the allocated 45 overs. Cutts took out his bat for a responsible and pathfinding 69, with nine fours, batting in all during 31 overs and ensuring that his team set a testing target.
Upminster recovered from an early setback as Terry Wyatt (44) and Alan Ison added 51 for the second stand, and the visitors' bowlers came back into the game as the innings slipped to 115-5, Chris Fenwick picking up 2-42. With fifteen overs left and 83 runs to make, Upminster ought to have been in greater difficulty, yet half-chances eluded the Wells field, and Ison was able to lead his side home with a fine unbeaten 88, finishing the game with six and four from the forty-third over. The victory came with just ten balls remaining, and to this extent was very close, while the home side had five wickets in hand at the point of passing the total set. Upminster will now play St.Lawrence of Kent in the Semi-Finals to be played out on 22 June. |

Eastbourne CC |
TWCC won by 56 runs |
At the Saffrons, TWCC won the toss and batted in warm sunshine, but it was Eastbourne who enjoyed the early exchanges as the visitors' innings slumped to 50-5 after 14 overs. The recovery was led by Richard Cutts (28) in a cameo of wristy strokeplay, and the score more than doubled as Grant Stephens got into his stride with some lofted drives, and from 110-7, Wells pushed on with startling effect as Stephens played a remarkable tour de force which turned the match about in a mere 20 overs. The hitherto dominant home attack was torn apart as Stephens launched 14 fours and a six, receiving support from Chris Fenwick in an eighth partnership of 55, and, spectacularly, 75 for the ninth stand with an equally aggressive Chris Williams. Williams, one of the Portman Cup U15 heroes from 2007, hit four fours and two sixes while Stephens - a member of the Kent NAYC U19 KO winners from 1995 - added a blitz of boundaries as seven overs yielded more than ten-per-over. Stephens perished attempting to reach a richly deserved century, and the innings ended shortly afterwards on a challenging 254-9.
Williams took just 21 balls for his 44*, with Stephens collecting 95 from 81.
The reply saw the early order reach a solid 60-1 after 17 overs, but Wells' bowlers then removed five batsmen while a further twenty runs accrued, and the chase became fatally stalled. Munro stood firm, but the spin of Oli Priestman (4-21) prevailed, and it was not until the latter stages that the innings regained any real momentum. Fenwick and Stephens each returned telling spells, and the groundwork was smart and safe, with Brough Cooper picking up three deft catches behind the wicket. Ollie Ody (35) partnered Munro as 62 runs were added for the seventh wicket, and an unbroken 55 came for the eighth stand, but the target was never seriously threatened, and the forty-five overs concluded with the score having reached 198-7, giving victory to Wells by 56 runs, and a place in the next round of the Cup. Munro remained unbeaten with 52 (six fours).
The TWCC XI will now face Upminster CC (who triumphed over Lordswood CC) at Upminster on Sunday June 1, with all to play for. |
