Wimbledon CC Sunday Trust XI
TWCC lost by 6 wkts

A match that had to be played at Wimbledon owing to the unavailability of The Nevill Ground was played out between the 2009 Sunday League Winners of Kent and Surrey, and home advantage prevailed, unfortunately for Wells.

Their eventual XI underwent some late changes, which upset the balance of the side, but, winning the toss and batting, the total posted was somewhat under-par for the ground, and the occasion.

Two quick wickets for Wimbledon required recovery, and Richard Cutts (47) partnered Harry Florry (29) as 75 runs came for the third partnership in nineteen overs, but the home attack struck back meaningfully when this pairing was separated. Cutts made the headway, striking seven fours, albeit with two chances offered, as the stand flourished, but the bowling permitted few liberties other than a surfeit of wides. 94-3 became 127-7 in six overs, and the cream of the visitors' innings was swept away in an unexpected passage of play that was marked by poor shot selection. Sam Watts, however, remained to bolster the later order, and he and Michael Churchill (21) now added 50 runs for the eighth wicket in eight overs, and gave the score some real substance, and a target to defend. Watts (three fours) rotated the strike cleverly, and emerged undefeated at the close with a polished 51, hitting up 29 with Chris Fenwick in the final three overs to bring the total to a competitive 206-8. Daniel Urquhart snapped up 3-47 to head the home effort.

The reply was anchored by a staunch vigil from Max Fernie, around whom the victory march was based. Fenwick (2-49) managed an early breakthrough, while Churchill (2-37) gave hope as the chase was restricted to 81-3 after sixteen overs, but Fernie now took full toll of some loose bowling as he motored to an accomplished half-century in partnership with William Leith (45). These two took the match away from Wells as they posted 75 for the fourth stand in just fourteen overs, and then Fernie and skipper Tom Eaves went on to the required total without further loss. Fernie carried his bat for a vital and secure undefeated 98 (12 fours), bringing victory to Wimbledon by a handsome margin, and ending the unbeaten run by Wells in the tournament.

The venue was excellent in all respects, and it must be hoped that Wimbledon reach these heights again in years to come !

Cowdrey Aero Sunday XI
TWCC won by default

TWCC were offficially named as Division One Champions of 2009 with an uncatchable 30 points as at 23 August 09. Cowdrey conceded the game and all points, being unable to raise a team on the day. There remains now just a 'Grand Final' - supposedly on Sep 13 - where TWCC are asked to play the Surrey Champions.

Holmesdale Aero Sunday XI
TWCC won by 5 wkts

Wells Sunday League XI notched one further win in their bid for honours, the final game next weekend holding the outcome of the campaign.

Holmesdale batted first upon winning the toss, but the Wells attack steadily worked through the early order to bring the innings to a low-point of 67-6. William Browne (37*) directed a very necessary rescue, with strong support from Joshua Salter (30) and Fred Shaw (28*), and the forty overs produced a final total of 172-7, which allowed the visitors a target to defend.

The Wells' reply featured an opening partnership of 108, as Chris Williams and Harry Florry established a commanding basis after just ninteen overs. Williams was first to depart, having notched a rapid-fire 60 from 52 balls, yet Holmesdale fought back strongly as Mark Epps snapped up 4-27 to bring the chase sliding to an uncomfortable 135-5, H.Florry having fallen for a fluent 59. Three batsmen made ducks during Epps' 20-ball burst, but Sam Stickler had buckled down to the task ahead, and, aided by a brisk not out fifteen from Fred Florry, he saw his side home without further loss. Stickler ended up with 25 not out, and Wells remain at the head of the Division One Aero Table with just the game away to Cowdrey to win if the Championship is to be taken.

After many frustrations in a long and busy year, Will Stickler's XI are poised now for a possible triumph, should the final match go their way.

HSBC Aero Sunday XI
TWCC won by 157 runs

On the same track upon which the Saturday KL match had been played out, Wells (with only ten men) won the toss and batted, with such gusto that 265 runs were run up in the allocated 40 overs, with the top three in the list all making half-centuries.

Skipper Harry Florry was partnered by the fluent Richard Cutts as 118 runs were posted in 17 overs for the opening stand, Cutts notching 61 (10 fours in 56 balls). He was replaced by Evert Bekker as 64 more were added in twelve overs before Florry departed for a pathfinding 82, at which point HSBC began to strike back. Leggie George Hutton snapped up 5-34, although a savage interlude from Bekker, in which he smote 41 in eleven balls, shifted the total up to 248 before a tumble of wickets slowed the late charge. Bekker made 68 with five fours and two enormous sixes, and the remaining batsmen kept up the rate of just under seven-per-over.

Unsurprisingly, the reply was overawed by the task before them, and the Wells attack moved to a comfortable win well inside the overs quota. James Nethercott (5-27) took the honours, with strong support from Chris Fenwick (2-21) and Ben Entacott (2-18), while Fred Florry completed the round-up as HSBC were dismissed for 108 after 33.2 overs.

The win pushed Wells to the top of the League, on the same points as Blackheath, but having played fewer games.

Statistical note : the opening partnership for TW was the 100th 50+ stand that Richard Cutts had shared in since 1997.

Hartley Aero Sunday XI
TWCC won by 52 runs

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Will Stickler's Aero League XI made a very satisfactory start to the campaign as they recorded a 52-run victory at the Hartley Club's Ground.

Gregor Paterson and Ollie Priestman repaired the early loss of a wicket in a brisk second partnership of 64, ended only by one of several excellent deepfield catches, before a vintage attacking display from Chris Williams hoisted the total beyond the 200. Priestman reached a dominant, free-scoring 75 (10 fours and one six) from 57 deliveries before departing to a fine boundary catch, while Williams was even faster, reaching 70 from 51 balls with ten fours and two sixes, scored all around the wicket in a memorable exhibition of strokeplay that ended at 202 after 32 overs. The fifth stand of 77 with Theo Burley was almost completely monopolised by Williams, while the final seven overs added another 47 as wickets tumbled in the run-in.

Set a target of 250 from their 40 overs, Hartley set off at a tremendous pace, with James Thompson (68) in the vanguard, assistance coming from Lewis Hickford and Nick Lee as the halfway point was reached at 120-2. Matt Green (2-34) and Wesley Bryce-Borthwick (2-28) finally achieved important breakthroughs, and, with the rest of the attack providing notable input, the home innings was quickly reduced to 197 all out as the chase undid the later effort. Some neat groundwork was exemplified by Paterson's direct-hit run-out, and a brace of tidy caught-and-bowled dismissals showed sound intent, the win for Wells coming with just fourteen balls in hand.
