23/08/2010 TW win all games in the weekend 22-23 August 2010 ...

Not since 6th July 2008 had TWCC had a Saturday when all played games resulted in victory, and this time, TW Sunday 2 added a KSDL League win to round off a magnificent achievement, not least as TW I, II and III were all in the midst of relegation avoidance issues. Some irksome comments in the local Press also served as a strong stimulus to achieve success, and few would have reckoned on the amazing outcome before the results came in. The battles are not quite over yet, and it must be hoped that the tremendous spirit and resilience can persist for just two more weeks ...

20/06/2010 Three individual 50s for TW First XI ...

For the first time for quite a while in the Premier Division, TWCC flagship First Team recorded three half-centuries, these coming in their innings of 257 all out at The Mote. Kiwi Leighton Morgan scored 86, Gregor Paterson 72 and skipper Mark Smith 53. All four League sides have now accomplished this feat at least once since 2006, although one has to go back to 1999 for the last time that TW 1 did this. Then, against Bromley in a 2-Dayer, TW ran up 431-6, with Mark Alexander scoring 99, Matt Banes 112 and Tony Howard 88*.

22/05/2010 Mark achieves Premier Double ...

Club Captain Mark Smith reached the 'Double' of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the KL Premier Division when he dismissed Charlie Hemphrey of Hartley on Saturday. The feat, of notable rarity, came from 61 matches played since 2003 for TWCC First XI, for whom Mark has additionally been the skipper since 2005.

22/05/2010 TW III produce three individual half-centuries ...

Not since June 2007 has a TW XI recorded three 50s in an innings, the record being posted with four by TW IV on Sep 1 of that year as promotion was clinched in an avalanche of runs.

Chasing a mere 361 to win in a 92-over match, TW never wilted and for prolonged periods kept pace with the chase. Brough Cooper (85), Michael Churchill (57) and Stefan Grosvenor (53*) were the personnel concerned, and stout assistance came down the list, headed by Greg Brunger (42) in an opening partnership of 122 from 18.2 overs. Altogether, 41 fours and 5 sixes were achieved, being almost 2/3 of the final total of 311-8 when stumps were drawn.

A wonderful achievement by a ten-man side !!

06/07/2008 TWCC League XIs all triumph together again ...

For a third time, and twice now in 2008, all four TWCC League XIs won their games on the same day, to match 31 May 08 and 5 May 07. For the First XI this was especially sweet as the result propelled them into second spot in the Premier Division, the best placement since the glory days of 1987/88. The Club now embark on the 'return nine' to see how the various campaigns finish up.

01/06/2008 Four League wins out of four ... again ...

On May 5 2007, TWCC set a standard when all four KL XIs won their respective games on the same day ... on 31 May 2008, TWCC did it again. All players and selectors, supporters and followers can be justly proud of this on-field achievement.

The TWCC Think Tank also have the view that as many as 28 'Youth' players (current and recent) were part of this effort, from a total of 44 persons involved ~ which may well be a record at the moment ... and likely to be surpassed ?

All four League XIs took 20 points from the encounters concerned, with full details on http://tunbridgewells.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp.

07/02/2008 New Chairman of the Kent League Committee

It is with pleasure that it can be announced that our Chairman, Nigel Keess, has been voted in as the new Chairman of the Kent League Committee. Nigel succeeds Howard Smith, who has been 'in post' for nine years, and under whom the present format of matches has evolved.

We therefore wish Nigel every success in this new role, in addition to his local TWCC duties, and trust that the prosperity and happy guidance of the League will prevail under this new leadership.

22/08/2007 TWCC U-15s lift Portman Cup at the Finals ...

The TWCC U-15 Dream continued, and climaxed in a performance in the Finals which was both clinical and ultimately of the highest standard.
Losing the toss in the first Semi-Final, TWCC were inserted on a wet top, and, had several early chances been held, might have been troubled. Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) were unable to translate these moments into dominance, and handed Tom Elliott and Chris Williams the initiative, and these two needed no second invitation. After ten overs, 102 delightful runs had been posted, and Tom had retired with an undefeated 53. Chris, as so often is the case, followed soon after, but the innings pushed on to a massive 158-5 after the 20 overs, and Mansfield had it all to do.
Opening spells of great speed and accuracy from Sunny Mohammed and Caspian Paget were augmented by clever spin from Tom Elliott, and the ever-miserly Tom Jenner, and the Nottingham boys had no answers. The innings never got going, and wickets fell regularly. A final total of 66-9 propelled Wells into the Cup Final by a stonking 92 run margin.
Newport (Wales) this time promised sterner opposition, and, batting first, raced to 80-0 after 12 overs, skipper Imran Hassan spearheading the effort with a retired not out 50, but thereafter Wells contained the runscoring so well that the target was held at 124 and 6 wickets were captured.
This pony had only one trick, however, and Wells showed why they have persevered so successfully throughout the competition, as a splendid recovery was mounted after the early loss of Chris Williams. Needing to bat out 18 overs and maintain an asking rate of 6.3 runs per over, and faced with 6 men on the fence from over 8, Sam Stickler and Tom Elliott played handsome mature cricket and did all that was asked as 100 runs were added for the second partnership.
Sam retired for an unbeaten 50, then Tom was needlessly run out, but these two lads had piloted the innings to 118 off 18.3 overs and a four from Max Thorpe nailed the Trophy as Wells romped home by eight wickets.
The Elliott/Stickler partnership was almost professional in its concepts, execution and finesse, and deservedly set the basis from which the victory was achieved. Thus it was that the Cup came - for the first time - to a Kent XI, and TWCC could be justly proud of their players and coaches, and the massive complement of well-wishers who made the journey to Bournemouth in support. A day not to be forgotten by participants and parents alike, made memorable in the outcome and in the allround sportsmanship displayed by a very fine set of young players.

18/08/2007 Inaugural Langdale Cup won by TWCC U-17 for 2007 ...

Tunbridge Wells CC U-17s won the 29th Annual Colts Festival yesterday at The Nevill. This year's Festival, sponsored by solicitors Donaldson West, was the first year in which the new Jonathan Langdale Trophy was awarded. It was wonderfully poignant therefore that Wells became the first winners of the new cup for the festival started by Jonathan in 1979. A number of the players in the winning line-up had greatly benefitted from Jonathan's coaching.
That Wells won the trophy at all was in itself a shock towards the end of the day - Bexley on 115 for 1, chasing only 167 to win, and with 20 overs remaining, were seemingly confidently pacing their march to inevitable victory. Momentum started to swing back towards an even contest when Tom Jenner ripped out the stumps three times in quick succession to wipe out the middle order in an inspired spell of 3-18. And sensing that they really could push on to win it, Tom Elliott then spun out three more in his last two overs. Caspian Paget and Chris Williams also took wickets. In the end, all was well as the Trophy was won narrowly by 28 runs.
Wells had got off to a good start with skipper Will Stickler and Alex Williams putting on 62 for the first wicket, with Will scoring 53. The rest of the innings rather fell away, with Matt Ody taking 4 wickets, and Wells feeling they were shy of a really competitive total.
In earlier rounds Wells (171-7) beat Lingfield (139 a.o.) with notable performances coming from Theo Burley with 45, Will Sticker 30 and James Sharp 31. Will then took 3 for 7.
Wells (141-2) also overcame St. Lawrence & Highland Court (140-9) with Alex Williams scoring a brilliant 80 not out and brother Chris Williams taking 3-26.

15/08/2007 Simon reaches 350 First Team League appearances ...

The game last Saturday against Blackheath was the 350th First Team KCL appearance for Simon Routh, a sequence which began as long ago as 1980. This is a major achievement, not only in terms of fitness and ability, but also loyalty and perseverance. Very few players in the Kent League have attained such a pinnacle, but there are other notables (such as Kent Chairman Carl Openshaw) who have touched these heights for Tunbridge Wells CC. The missing factor on this occasion was a nice win, but Simon has seen all of the vicissitudes of the KCL over this timespan. Hearty congratulations to Simon upon reaching this milestone in his career.

09/07/2007 First Team post record total at Gore Court ...

TWCC flagship First XI notched a record One-Day Premier Division total when they posted 320-6 at The Grove (against Gore Court). Wells have seen more runs scored in the two-day League but in this format, the score was a record for the Club. There have been occasions when in Division One the Firsts reached 300 but this is the best at this level. David Else collected a personal best with a not out 132, and guest Kent Player Min Patel hit up 99.

12/06/2007 That ball ... the Brough story in full ...

Away at Canterbury in the League, Peter Ford finally succumbed to that 'leg' after five balls of his seventh over, and Brough Cooper was picked out by skipper Nigel Keess to complete the over. Not noted by the cognoscenti for his profound bowling skills, Cooper sent down an innocent-looking ball outside the off stump with an offbreak action. Demonic revolutions and supernatural forces enabled the ball to spin wickedly past the Canterbury Number Three, who had incautiously shouldered arms, and into the wicket, to general disbelief and consternation.
'Puppy' thereby took a wicket with his first ball in the Kent League ... indeed his only ball so far, for, having completed Ford's over, he was mysteriously returned to the ranks ...

05/06/2007 Fourth XI join the '3 x 50' club ...

In just their fifth match, the 're-born' Fourth XI joined their League colleagues when posting three individual half-centuries in one innings. Blue Star II were the victims of this effort at their home ground.
The Second XI achieved this feat twice in 2006, the Third XI last in 2003 (away to OD CUACO), and the First XI have to look back some time for their most recent such achievement ...

22/05/2007 Barney shines as history repeats itself ...

Barney Shaw hit an unbeaten 129 in the TW IV XI game at Beckenham on 19 May, echoing the effort ten seasons earlier on the same ground by Richard Cutts, who made 117*, also in a Fourths league match. For Barney, this was his second hundred within twelve months, having made 110 in a Sunday game in 2006 - the two tons representing a feat without parallel as far as the records show. The Archivist writes : the youngest known player to have notched a League ton remains Richard in 1998, aged 13 ... Barney was 14 at the time of his remarkable innings.

05/05/2007 5 May : 4 wins out of 4 !

Four League Wins in one day !! TWCC notched up a record on May 5 2007 with all four Saturday League XIs winning their respective encounters on the same day for the first time. Hitherto there have been occasions when the top three sides recorded League wins, but this was one better, and hopefully can be repeated ! Altogether, six half-centuries were obtained, two being taken on to unbeaten centuries. There was one sole instance of a five-wicket-haul !
