Dartford CC I XI
TWCC won by 148 runs
An icy cold March gave way to a record April heatwave, and Wells made the journey over to Dartford where a fine batting surface awaited them. The toss was won by the home captain, who opted to field first, however a record tally was hit up by Wells in the first of the forty-over Cup matches organised by the ECB, as 317 runs were knocked up from just 240 balls with both of the Williams brothers being seen to strong advantage in largely helpful conditions.

An opening partnership of 125 from 17 overs featured some buccaneering strokeplay from the new captain, Chris Williams, before Mike Waller (35) was run out, and Dartford enjoyed a brief respite before Alex Williams joined his brother in a third stand that blasted 68 at almost ten per over. Williams (C) reached a wonderful century in this phase before falling for 121 (12 fours and 5 sixes) at 199-4, but the punishment was now accelerated with Williams (A) swashbuckling 73 from 42 balls as he and Marcus O’Riordan (33*) scorched along to raise the 300. Williams (A) reached 99* when he got back on strike with four deliveries yet to come, but was rather well caught without addition, and the target was set at 318 for the victory chase. Between them, the Williams boys struck up 220 runs, with 22 fours and 9 sixes, and it must be hoped that their super form can be maintained.

The reply was somewhat overshadowed by so tall a task, and the visiting attack had things their own way while the score slipped to 76-6 with half of the overs gone, before some resolute resistance was encountered. Randy Rampersad (52*) joined Sam Jewiss in a fine face-saving seventh partnership of 62 which thwarted the hitherto dominant Dave Smith and Isaac Bepey; Smith returned to break the stand, but Wells were unable to take all ten wickets in the time remaining, and, although well defeated, Dartford held out on 169-8 from their overs. Wells will visit Bickley Park on May 13 for the next instalment of the National ECB Cup.
